Workshop on laser cleaning

The workshop will be devoted to practical aspects of utilization of lasers for removal of unwanted material from cultural heritage objects. It will be located at the Faculty of Conservation building, Lea Street 27-29.
- 8:30 – 9:00 – Registration (Lea Street 27-29)
- 9:00 – 10:00 – introductory lecture by Johann Nimmrichter (Bundesdenkmalamt Österreich, Wien) will concentrate on basics of laser operation, definitions, cleaning protocols in most popular cases e.g. stone cleaning, and safety instructions
- 10:00 – 11:00 – first hands-on session (in two or three groups) with lasers
- 11:00 – 11:30 – coffee break (exchange of groups)
- 11:30 – 13:00 – second hands-on session
- 13:00 – 14:00 – lunch
- 14:00 – 14:45 – second lecture (also by Johann Nimmrichter) devoted to more challenging applications
- 14:45 – 16:00 – third hands-on session (more demanded objects)
- 16:00 – 16:30 – coffee break (exchange of groups)
- 16:30 – 17:30 – forth hands-on session (more demanded objects)
- 17:30 – 18:45 – summarizing meeting with discussion and questions from the participants.
- from 19:00 – welcome reception of the conference open also for workshop participants
For hands-on sessions the following lasers will be presented and provided for participants:
- Nd-YAG Thunder Art laser from Light for Art (a sector in the El.En. group) kindly provided by RESTAURO sp z oo
- Novel GC-1 laser cleaning system from GC Laser Systems Inc. (USA)
- EOS-QS 1064 nm Q-switch and Short Free Running compact and versatile laser with beam delivery through optical fiber from Light for Art (a sector in the El.En. group)
- Novel compact Er:YAG laser system LIGHT BRUSH 2 from Light for Art (a sector in the El.En. group)
Materials and readings:
- All participants will receive a bi-lingual (Polish and English) text book on fundamentals of lasers and laser cleaning, written especially for art restorer (paper copy only)
- All participants will receive a manual: Cleaning Safely with a Laser in Artwork Conservation (paper copy and as a pdf file)
- Participants are encouraged to refer to a Handbook on the Use of Lasers in Conservation and Conservation Science (available on-line only)
